Loving Someone You Cant Have- 7 Tips That Can Help

Loving Someone You Cant Have- 7 Tips That Can Help

Among the most agonizing feelings in the world is that of loving someone who doesn’t love you back. Unrequited love doesn’t just take an emotional toll, but also a physical one. If love isn’t being very kind to you and the object of your affection has friend-zoned you or worse still, refuses to acknowledge your existence, you can step up and take control of your life and find someone who loves you back the way you deserve.

Here are seven tips that can help you get started to living beyond the pain.

1. Talk About Your Feelings

It’s not always easy to talk about unrequited love, but burying your feelings is not the solution to your problem. Burying your feelings prevents healthy healing and makes you more prone to a faux pas that can ruin your relationship if you are still friends. A good way to handle your feelings is to talk to a trusted friend or write a journal. This will make it much easier to enjoy your time together when you run into them and you’ll be less likely to ask questions that hurt you. Acting hurt or asking questions such as “Do you think we both might ever have had a chance?” is counterproductive.

2. Focus On Yourself

Rather than wallowing in self-pity, a great way to beat the pain is to turn your attention to yourself and to your hobbies. If you’ve let yourself go in the process of pursuing someone, it’s time to pay attention to yourself and pamper yourself. Get a makeover, join a gym or join a club. If you’re not feeling very social at the moment, why not get a new hobby? Gardening can be fulfilling. Or, if you love music, consider learning to play a new instrument. Hobbies can make you feel better about yourself, which in turn diminishes the hurt feelings behind unrequited love.

3. Don’t Isolate Yourself

While it may be very tempting to just curl up in a corner and let the pain wash over your senses, this isn’t going to help you heal. A human touch is crucial to emotional and mental healing. So surround yourself with friends and family who can offer support and guidance. Avoid pessimists or negative people. Rather, spend most of your time with positive companions and you’re more likely to imbibe their positive mindset. The right association can also be key to letting go of your feelings and maybe moving on and meeting someone more worthy of your love.

4. Love Yourself

At times, we are our worst critic. We may spend hours trying to analyze what went wrong, whether we weren’t good enough or whether there was something we could have done better. If this is you, you need to stop and love yourself. Forgive yourself for real and perceived faults to heal faster. You are still worthy of love and deserve to be happy.

5. Recognize Weak Moments

Healing your heart when you love someone but cannot be with them is a long process. Love can often be like an addiction and breaking free from your addiction to a person can be a massive challenge. Despite your best efforts, you’re bound to have weak moments where you feel you’ve gone back to square one. Or, there may be days when your emotions are raw and you just cannot let go. This is normal and is not a failure on your part. Don’t pretend that you’re okay on bad days. Call a trusted friend or take a nap. You’ll be surprised at how much your heart and mind heal when you sleep.

6. Limit Contact

If you can handle being just friends, good for you! However, most of us find it excruciating to be friend-zoned with someone we love. Meeting the one you love can bring back old memories, intensify unfulfilled emotions and reinforce painful yearning. At times, the best way to move forward is to limit contact or to cut contact entirely. While this may seem to be almost impossible, you can do it! Seeing someone you love being happy without you, or worse still, happy with someone else, can be beyond painful. So do yourself a favor and limit contact even if you can’t cut contact entirely. Limiting contact also applies to social media feeds. Hide their feeds or un-follow them – you don’t need constant reminders of how happy they are without you.

7.  Get Back Into The Dating Game

While it may seem unthinkable to love someone else, the truth is that life does move on. There are many more fish in the sea, and you’re bound to go fishing when you’re hungry and stop mourning the one that got away. You don’t have to get back into the dating game immediately. However, take baby steps towards meeting new people. You never know when you’ll meet the real love of your live – someone who will love you with the same passion as you love them!  In summary, yes, it is painful to love someone who doesn’t love you back. Although your heart is breaking, it is not the end of your love life. It’s okay to sulk and wallow in misery for a while. However, once you’ve given yourself a bit of time, step up and flex your heart-muscles to show how strong you are. And when you’re ready, love will find you.
