Celebrating the Summer Solstice June 2020

 

The Summer Solstice, also known as Midsummer’s Night, or Litha, is the longest day of the year and when the Sun reaches its peak in the Northern hemisphere. It marks the onset of Summer, and the days that follow become shorter as the Sun begins to wane. It is a celebration of light and abundance before the hard work ahead harvesting crops.

The Sun is believed to hold powerful energy for regeneration, renewal, and self-reflection. You can celebrate this light and natural event by engaging in one or all of the following activities:

  • Watch the Sunrise. Wake up before the sunrise and prepare a ginger tea or your favorite coffee. Then, go outside where you can see the Sunrise. Hold the cup to the Sun and say something like, “Hail and welcome Sun, I honor you and I drink to you.” Then, take a sip and enjoy your tea, or coffee while soaking in the magic of the Summer Solstice sun.

 

  • Take a warm bath using sliced oranges, tangerine, or tangelo for joy. Stand above the water and envision the bright light of the Sun filling the water with golden light. Say something like, “I honor you, Sun, on your brightest day. Thank you for filling this water with your loving light.” Then soak until you feel energized with the radiant energies it has shared with you.

 

  • Bless your crystal, silver, and gold jewelry in the bright light of the Summer Solstice sun. If you can, you want to let it sit in the Sun for at least an hour, it will not only cleanse your jewelry, it will empower them with positivity, and luck.

 

  • Spend time outdoors. Camping, hiking, biking, swimming, and gardening are ideal this time of year and a fun way to enjoy nature. Take off your shoes and feel the earth between your toes! Nature offers a reflection to our own lives, if we learn to tune into its rhythms.

 

  • Build a bonfire. It is believed that fire deters evil spirits who roam freely as the Sun turns south. Therefore, the bigger the fire, the further away the spirits are kept! Jumping over the bonfire is also a popular tradition that is believed to bring prosperity as well as a purifying and strengthening rite. *If you choose to jump the fire, please do so responsibly.

 

  • Feast with your friends, and gather with loved ones to share a feast in celebration. Practice gratitude, and eat mindfully by creating a platter of fresh fruits, such as oranges, golden or red apples, vegetables, edible flowers, and fresh herbs.

 

  • Make a flower crown. Gather flowers and herbs from your garden, or from a bouquet. You will also need floral tape, floral wire, scissors, and your head. Take your floral wire and wrap around your head where you would like your crown to sit. Do that at least twice to make it sturdy making sure to leave it a little loose. Be sure that the stems on your flowers are at least 3 inches long, so you can tape the stems to the crown, and then wrap the entirety of the wire with the floral tape and as many flowers you want until you feel you are done and happy with the results.

 

Traditionally, in early Europe, some celebrated midsummer by setting large wheels on fire and rolling them down a hill into a body of water. In ancient China, the Summer Solstice was observed by a ceremony to celebrate “yin” forces, or femininity. The Summer Solstice has long been a significant time of year in many cultures throughout history, and has been marked by festivals all over the world.

The Summer Solstice is a time to experience our fullest potential as we take action towards manifesting our deepest dreams. Celebrate your achievements and honor who you are at this moment and assess who you are becoming. You can do this by doing something symbolic to honor this time of year, and enjoy in the spirit of celebration.
